The main message seems to be that,
even if you can't improve a situation for someone else, you can
still be a strong shoulder to lean on, depending on how well you
use your listening and responding skills.
The Lundbergs offer a whole
section to applying their validation techniques while raising
children. There are many ideas about how to talk to your
kids by actively listening and making them know that their
feelings are meaningful to you. I was amazed at how some
very simple, everyday comments can erode a child's feeling of
self-worth.
The book is extremely
well-written and smartly laid out. There are handy
pull-out quotes and effective examples. I found it easy to
read, but more importantly, very pertinent to today's
relationships.
