I Don't Have to Make Everything All Better
(Book Review, by Mia Cronan)
by Gary and Joy Lundberg
ISBN 0-14-028643-8

Six practical principles that empower others to solve their own problems while enriching your relationships

In this day and age when we try to read everything we can get our hands on concerning being better spouses, better parents, and better friends, it seems there just isn't enough time in a day to do so.  I've come across a book that is worth the time.  I Don't Have to Make Everything All Better is a strong tool for dealing with our feelings and those of others.  It even includes a workbook at the end, which is comprised of several exercises that test your knowledge of what you've read and reinforce the key components of validating others' feelings.

The main message seems to be that, even if you can't improve a situation for someone else, you can still be a strong shoulder to lean on, depending on how well you use your listening and responding skills.

The Lundbergs offer a whole section to applying their validation techniques while raising children.  There are many ideas about how to talk to your kids by actively listening and making them know that their feelings are meaningful to you.  I was amazed at how some very simple, everyday comments can erode a child's feeling of self-worth.

The book is extremely well-written and smartly laid out.  There are handy pull-out quotes and effective examples.  I found it easy to read, but more importantly, very pertinent to today's relationships.
