Here's a terrific handbook for the parent who isn't sure how to encourage a positive learning experience for her children. I was happy to see the use of ideas that are "outside of the box" from what we hear from some psychologists today.
This book touches on playtime and how it relates to learning, understanding competence and its impact on learning, self-esteem, and the use of rewards for a job well done. I was impressed to note that self-esteem was carefully addressed. The notion that self-esteem is not the end-all and be-all for kids and that it must be gotten through achievement was expressed. Self-esteem cannot be given in the form of a gift or a reward, yet this is taught by many "experts" today. This treated especially well in this book.
I highly recommend this book to any parent with school-aged children!
