Pretend Soup and Other Real Recipes - A Cookbook for Preschoolers & Up
(Reviewed by Cheri Sicard)
By Mollie Katzen and Ann Henderson
| Pretend Soup is a very real book that can provide some excellent opportunities for bonding between parent and child. Legendary author Katzen (The Moosewood Cookbook, The Enchanted Broccoli Forest) and educator Ann Henderson have brought cooking down to a level that can be enjoyed by three to eight year olds. The fruits of their labors will be enjoyed by the entire family as these are real recipes that will appeal to adults as well as kids. |

With an grown up helper, kids can turn out delicious dishes like quesadillas, popovers, salads, soup, and even pizzas. The emphasis is placed on fruits, vegetables and fresh ingredients -- this is wholesome, healthy fare that you’ll be happy to have your kids eat.
Molly’s whimsical illustrations provide the step by step instructions that are so clear, anyone can follow them, even if they don't know how to read yet. There are extra notes for grownups too, including cooking hints and safety tips.
What could be more nurturing than cooking with your child? You’re teaching a valuable skill, awakening an interest in food and nutrition and best of all, having fun. Cooking can develop self-confidence as well as be used to teach a number of subjects and skills: reading, counting, measuring and science to name a few.
The moment I saw this book, I knew what all the kids on my gift giving lists were getting for their birthdays this year.
