Review: How To Say It To Teens
(Review by Mia Cronan)
Written by Richard Heyman, Ed.D.
ISBN 0-7352-0188-9, 456 pages
Talking about the most important topics of their lives...
| Any parent of a teen knows how easily communication can break down when trying to send a message to, or get information from,
a teenager. Even after all avenues are exhausted,
sometimes the only result is that both parent and teen huff
off in frustration or anger. Oftentimes, words are said
that are later regretted.
Dr. Heyman speaks from
experience in How To Say It To Teens. As the father of
three children, two adopted, he had his share of frustration
with his middle son and learned a lot from it. |

Here in
his book, he fires on all the pistons regarding how to tackle
problems and say just the right thing to get your teen to listen and
to open up to you. For instance, just som eof the topics hit
covers are divorce, anger, school issues, honesty, popularity, and
tatoos and body piercing. He illustrates examples of how not
to say things, then he gives suggestions on what is
appropriate to say. I highly
recommend this book to parents of teens, if just to keep on your
shelf for handy reference. Dr. Heyman has provided a wonderful
resource, and it will certainly give parents of teens a solid peace
of mind.
