Shamrock Collage
by Heide Kaminski

My kids really enjoyed this project. You need two days for it. You can incorporate learning about the color green, the number four, the letter s and the shape heart with this project.

Provide assistance as needed based on the individual child's abilities.  I did this with a group of 2 - 5 year old children.

- on a large white piece of paper draw four hearts (about the size of an adult hand) and a stem. Make one sheet per child.

- let the children paint them green (I encouraged the older children to stay within the lines. We used sponges to paint).

- on the following day cut out the hearts and stem (or let children cut by themselves)

- on a large piece of black construction paper arrange the hearts and stem into a shamrock and let children glue it on (the younger ones will rearrange the leaves into more of a Picasso version, but that's OK!)

I give out paintbrushes and small containers filled with glue to each child. Small containers with lids are great for storage, but little bowls such as from individual applesauce are good as well. Just put a very small amount of glue in, let the leftover dry and you can reuse them over and over.

- a white crayon is great for writing the name on the black paper.

We hung our pictures up for decoration and they look really cool!
