This is an excerpt from the forthcoming book, The Miracle of Practical Prayer, by Sandra Walker. It is a book of inspiration, about real people who have applied prayer to challenges in their lives and who have experienced miraculous results.

The Power of a Praying Wife

I sat in my accountant's office, stunned. I couldn't believe it. How could this be happening? After almost five years in business as a professional organizer, I was on the verge of having to shut my doors. Closing my eyes, I tried to hold back tears, and I felt that sick, numb feeling start in the pit of my stomach.
For months, I had been struggling, frightened, and worried. Unsure whether I could keep my business open, I didn't know what to do, or what direction to take. Now it seemed that I had no choice but to give up on my business and my dreams.

I drove home in a fog, crying most of the way. I felt shell-shocked. It just didn't seem possible that after working so hard for almost five years, striving to have faith, to follow where I was led and to do what felt right in my heart, that things were turning out this way.

When I got home, I lay down on the sofa and let the fear, anger, and pain wash over me. I cried until there were no tears left. I was exhausted, but I still felt wound up and restless. Needing to do something physical, I decided to mow the lawn.

As I walked behind the lawnmower, feeling numb and frightened, I began to pray from my heart. "God, please help me. You know how much I love what I do. It seems to be what I'm supposed to be doing now. It still feels right, still feels like I'm being led to do this. And I really don't want to have to go to work for someone else. But if that's what I'm supposed to do, God, I'll do it." I remembered something I'd heard Oprah Winfrey say that had really touched me. So I added, "I surrender, I surrender, I surrender all to you. What do You want me to do now? Thank You God."

I had prayed many times for help and guidance, but this time I really did surrender. I honestly let go and put the whole thing in God's hands. I was willing to do whatever I felt guided to do, even if that meant closing My Time Is Yours.
Soon my fear began to ease and I became more calm and peaceful. Then an idea came to me: send letters to friends, family, and colleagues asking for their help.

Feeling God's guidance in this, I sat down to write the letter. In it, I said that I was at a crossroads about whether to continue with my business or move on to something else. I asked for help in three ways: please tell three people about My Time Is Yours (I included 3 brochures to make this easy); please let me know of any job openings that they knew of; and to please remember me in their prayers. Then I thanked them for their support and friendship.

The response that I received was tremendous. Within two weeks, I had five new clients and two paid speaking engagements. I began getting numerous inquiries and requests for information about my services. Several inactive clients scheduled appointments to work with me again. I was contacted about four job openings with other companies. And Jenette Zubero, a business coach that I was acquainted with offered to coach me for two weeks at no charge. So many people were incredibly supportive and reached out to me in amazing ways. What a blessing!

As time passed, business continued to increase. There were occasions when fear cropped up. But when that happened, I thought of all the people praying for me. With so much love and support and positive energy surrounding me, I couldn't help but come through this all right.

This is what I've learned: Ask. Ask for what I need. Let go. Trust. Say, "thank You." And expect miracles. There is really nothing to fear, because God always takes care of me. I will always be OK.

Prayer is a powerful force. In the months since, miraculous things continue to happen. Today my business is successful and thriving. My clients appreciate me and they are a pleasure to work with. I am happy and feel that I am living my purpose. I'm even driving a new (to me) car, which came to me in an amazing way-but that is another story.
