The Person in
Authority
By Lisa Kline

and I began to look for Taylor, and I realized he must have gone to the parking
lot. We hurried there and found him walking down the sidewalk crying.
I
substitute teach at my children's school. When the school day is over my
children know to come to the classroom I have been assigned to that day. One
day my children came to the classroom as usual but I stepped next door to ask
another teacher a question. My younger son Steven saw me leave the room and
followed me. My oldest son Taylor was not paying attention and did not notice
me leave.
When he finally realized we
were not in the room, thinking we had left him he hurried and ran out of the
school to the parking lot. Steven and I began to look for Taylor, and I
realized he must have gone to the parking lot. We hurried there and found him
walking down the sidewalk crying. When he saw me he ran to me, sobbing '' I
thought you left me.'' I held him for a few moments and whispered to him, ''You
know that I would never leave you.''
After we had gotten into the
car I asked him where he should go if he gets separated from me. He wasn't sure
so I told him to always go to a person who is in authority. I gave him a couple
examples such as if he is in a grocery store go to the cashier or at the school
he should go to the principal's office. I went on to tell him that these people
were in authority and would help him.
After this experience I
thought how sometimes in the crises of my life I have behaved as Taylor. Not
knowing where to turn I have muddled through some of life's problems without
seeking the proper help. People in trouble turn to friends, psychologist,
psychics, and some even go it alone. They never seek out the person who is in
authority. Looking back in perspective, on many occasions, I should have gone
to the person in authority.
Who is the person in
authority? That person is our Heavenly Father. He will be there for us if we
will but turn to him. He is there ready and willing to be a listening ear and a
guiding hand. He has sent His son Jesus Christ to be our example. Revelation
3:20 states, ''Behold, I stand at the door, and knock; if any man hear my
voice, and open the door, I will come in to him.'' He is there for each of us
knocking at the door in times of trouble as well as in times of peace. Just as
I would never have left my son Taylor at the school alone he will never leave
us alone in this world.
