If You Broke It,
Mend It
By Jenette K. Rotatori-Zubero
She
had prayed to God to bring the family back together, to forgive each other for
harsh words spoken, and to help each of them let go of their hurt feelings.
A few issues back, I wrote
about a client that has problems with her in-laws. To refresh your memory,
there had been a blowout at a party she had thrown and ever since that day, my
client and her in-laws have had a very rocky relationship.
I knew she was to spend
Thanksgiving Day with her in-laws, so I made it a point to ask her how the day
had gone.
She recapped all the work she
had done to repair the relationship with her husband's family. She had prayed
to God to bring the family back together, to forgive each other for harsh words
spoken, and to help each of them let go of their hurt feelings. She had kept
her silence during times of conflict so as not to fuel any further bad
feelings. She had made sure to give each family member a big kiss and hug when
she saw them.
But mostly she prayed.
''Yesterday'', she said, went
well. Although there is still some tension in the air, the family was able to
sit down to a lovely dinner, hold conversation without throwing seething looks,
and laugh and smile over old family memories. ''It was nice'', she said.
It was wonderful to hear her
speak so positively about her in-laws this morning. She had come from a place
of complete loss with them and had FOUND A WAY to start the healing within her
family. She had taken a situation that she thought would only be healed by
time, and had FOUND A WAY to heal it NOW.
What is broken in your life? A
relationship? A friendship? A dispute with a sibling? What are you waiting for
to fix it? Time may be a cure for wounds, but wouldn't it be nice to know that
YOU were the reason that a broken trust was glued back together, sanded out,
and repainted with brighter, more alive colors? This week, fix just one broken
relationship. Make just one offering of peace to someone you miss or to someone
you've hurt. It matters not if you were right or wrong in the situation you
had, it matters that you found a way to fix something you had part in breaking.
