You Can't Get Where You're Going if You Haven't Been Where You've Been
by Jenette K. Rotatori-Zubero

Sometimes I get really freaked out (professional term, "freaked out") about where my life is taking me.

I start going through old memories in my head and wishing that I could have taken back things that I've said or done or didn't do. I become entangled in emotional duct-tape and feel my bad decisions have led me off-track more then once. If only I had stayed in that executive search job I'd be making so much money right now; if only I had kept my thoughts to myself I wouldn't be in a disagreement with my mother-in-law; if only I had not eaten that donut for breakfast I wouldn't be feeling so bloated and fat right now.

But timing is everything, isn't it? I talked on the phone with an eternal friend of mine today and she asked me what I thought about "things happening for a reason". I replied that I use to hold a lot of regrets, but that now I feel like everything happens for a reason. That if I wouldn't have made the decisions I've made in times past, I wouldn't be where I am today. And the truth is, I really like who I am today.

That conversation brought about a truth that we all should keep in mind on an ongoing basis. YOU CAN'T GET TO WHERE YOU'RE GOING, IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN WHERE YOU'VE BEEN. Any other path chosen would not have lead to the course you're on. Be thankful for where you've been and the mistakes you've made… and for the RIGHT things you've done, too. It's what makes us who we are. It's what makes this life so great. It's what keeps us growing.

When you think of your past decisions, which decisions do you think really "broke" you? Which decision do you think turned the tables on you and lead you down a totally different path then you wanted? Trace that decision directly to where you are today and then take notice of all the great things in your life that you have today BECAUSE of that one awful decision. Now, that wasn't such a bad path to take after all, was it?
