We’ve Traveled to 10 Countries with Our Kids — These 5 Were Incredible (And 5 We’d Skip Next Time)

Traveling with kids isn’t exactly the easiest thing in the world — and anyone who tells you otherwise is either a unicorn or lying. My partner and I have two little ones: a curious, energetic 4-year-old who asks “why?” a hundred times a day, and a fearless 2-year-old who seems determined to give us a heart attack in every new city we visit. Still, despite the chaos (or maybe because of it), we’ve spent the last few years taking them across 10 different countries.

We’ve traveled with strollers and snack bags, navigated airports during nap time, dealt with diaper blowouts in museum bathrooms, and learned — the hard way — which places truly welcome families and which ones are more “come back when your kids are 18.” Along the way, we’ve had magical moments: sunset dinners by the sea where our kids actually sat still, locals who welcomed us like family, and landscapes so breathtaking even the toddler paused to look.

But there were also countries that, for one reason or another, just didn’t work for us. Whether it was the lack of kid-friendly infrastructure, long travel times between cities, or places that just felt too hectic with tiny humans in tow — not every destination made us want to return.

Turkey

Exploring Turkey with kids was a captivating adventure. From the enchanting streets of Istanbul to the surreal landscapes of Cappadocia, it was an unforgettable experience. The sights, smells, and sounds of the Grand Bazaar were mesmerizing, offering a cultural immersion unlike any other. Our little ones were thrilled by the fairy chimneys, and they loved learning about the ancient history that surrounds this beautiful country.

The warm hospitality of the locals made us feel at home. Finding kid-friendly activities was never a problem, whether it was a boat trip on the Bosphorus or a playful day at the beach in Antalya.

Poland

Discovering Poland with our kids was an enriching experience filled with history and charm. The streets of Krakow captivated us with their medieval splendor, while the whimsical world of the Wieliczka Salt Mine was a highlight for the entire family. Our children were particularly fascinated by the stories of the legendary dragon that guards the city.

In Warsaw, the Copernicus Science Centre offered hands-on fun that kept everyone entertained for hours. The combination of educational and entertaining activities ensured that our days in Poland were both enjoyable and informative.

Spain

Spain was a vibrant tapestry of culture that dazzled both adults and kids alike. Our journey began in Barcelona, where Park Güell’s vibrant mosaics captured our children’s imaginations. The lively atmosphere of La Rambla filled our days with joy, while the beaches of Costa Brava provided endless fun.

In Madrid, the Retiro Park was a haven of relaxation. Our kids loved the puppet shows and hired boats to paddle on the tranquil lake. Spain’s rich culinary delights made every meal an adventure, with tapas being a particular family favorite.

Germany

Germany with kids was a wonderland of fairy-tale castles and bustling cities. The majestic Neuschwanstein Castle was like stepping into a storybook, fascinating our children with its grandeur and history. Munich’s interactive museums offered engaging experiences that educated and entertained at the same time.

Berlin was a mix of history and modernity, where the Berlin Wall’s remnants sparked curiosity and discussions. The vibrant markets and family-friendly parks made every day enjoyable. Germany’s efficient public transport made traveling with kids a breeze, ensuring a hassle-free adventure.

Iceland

Iceland’s natural wonders made our family trip unforgettable. The geysers, waterfalls, and volcanic landscapes captivated us all, while the Blue Lagoon was an oasis of relaxation. Our toddler was amazed by the geothermal activity and the breathtaking beauty of the Golden Circle.

Chasing the Northern Lights was magical, filling our evenings with excitement and awe. The friendly Icelandic people and their love for nature resonated with us deeply. Every corner of Iceland offered something unique, and the serene environment provided a perfect setting for family exploration.

Egypt

Despite its rich history, Egypt can be quite overwhelming for families with young children. The bustling streets of Cairo are filled with honking cars, making it difficult to navigate with strollers. Furthermore, the heat can be intense, especially during the summer months, which might not be ideal for toddlers who tire easily. Beyond that, while the pyramids are a sight to behold, their vastness and the crowds can be daunting. Security lines can be long, and patience is often tested. Finding child-friendly amenities is a challenge, adding to the stress of travel. Egypt, while fascinating, might be better explored when the kids are older.

India

India’s vibrant culture is intriguing but can be a sensory overload for kids. The bustling markets, vibrant colors, and the cacophony of sounds in places like Delhi can overwhelm even the most adventurous young ones. It’s not just about the crowds, but the chaos that often accompanies such vibrant places. Additionally, concerns about food safety for sensitive little stomachs add another layer of complexity. Public transportation can be crowded, which isn’t ideal with kids. The heat and humidity might also be difficult for children to handle. India promises adventure, but perhaps when the kids are more prepared for its intensity.

Italy

Although it may seem ideal for a family getaway with its delicious food and rich history, navigating its narrow cobblestone streets with a stroller can be challenging. Rome’s historic sites are impressive, but not all are child-friendly. Long lines and the lack of interactive exhibits can make tours tedious for younger kids. The charm of Italy comes with a pace that might not be suitable for a child who needs frequent breaks. Despite the delicious gelato, the nuances of Italian dining may not cater to picky eaters. Italy, with its beauty, is perhaps a destination best enjoyed when kids are older.

Brazil

Brazil’s lively atmosphere can be both exciting and challenging for families. The vibrant beaches of Rio are stunning, but they can be crowded, making it hard to keep an eye on younger kids. Safety concerns might also be a consideration in some urban areas, where pickpocketing can be an issue. Language barriers might add to the complexity, especially when trying to communicate essential needs for the kids. The tropical climate, with sudden rain showers, can disrupt carefully planned outings. While Brazil offers a rich cultural experience, the challenges might outweigh the joys when traveling with young children.

Austria

The charm of Austrian villages lies in their quaintness, which might not offer much entertainment for kids. Language barriers and the need for warm clothing add to the logistics. While the cultural offerings are rich, the structured nature of the experiences might not engage younger travelers. Austria, though enchanting, might be a destination to consider when kids are more interested in cultural exploration.
